Helicopter Awareness Day in Pigeon Forge, TN will be on April 21-22, 2008 from 10am until 4 pm. There will be tours and rides all day long. Helicopter Awareness Day started 6 years ago as a tribute to the owner of Scenic Helicopter Tours, Hal Haynes. Scenic Helicopter Tours is located in the great city of Pigeon Forge, TN. Hal Haynes was diagnosed with polio as a child. He was treated in Knoxville, TN at the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Hal always asked that people would instead of buying him gifts at different times of celebration during the year make contributions to the hospital instead. Hal’s son Dan Haynes decided to begin Helicopter Awareness Day as a time to raise awareness of helicopters. People could come by and see the helicopters, tour them, ask questions to the pilots and even take rides on them over Pigeon Forge, TN and Gatlinburg. Dan Haynes saw Helicopter Awareness Day be such a success that he decided to do it each year. It was so successful that Scenic Helicopter Tours was able to start another company called Helicopter Whirl’d Adventures servicing the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area. All proceeds of Helicopter Awareness Day will be donated to the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, TN. It will be held at Scenic Helicopter Tours Heliport on Highway 66 in Sevierville, TN (only a short distance from Pigeon Forge, TN).

Many different activities will be held at this Pigeon Forge event and food will also be available for purchase. Also at the Scenic Helicopter Tours Heliport you will be able to see aircrafts that the Knox County Sheriff’s Department use. See the UT Life Star, Wings Air Medical and Air Evac Life Team. Speak to the pilots and tour their helicopters, ask any questions that you could think of. On April 22 at the Helicopter Whirl’d Adventures Heliport guests will be able to enjoy the Pilot Gale at $65/person or $100/couple. Go for food, exhibits, simulators and just a good evening of fun while on your vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN. The helicopter simulators will be there from 6:30-9 pm for those of you who want to experience a plane ride but stay on the ground. Remember that all proceeds do go for a charitable cause.
