The Forbidden
Caverns
On your next
vacation to Pigeon Forge, TN take a tour of the Forbidden
Caverns. Located in Sevierville, TN, Forbidden Caverns is one of
the world’s most popular caverns. Forbidden Caverns now attracts
many tourists but was once home to Eastern Woodland Indians. The
Eastern Woodland Indians used the cave as shelter during the
winter months and used the stream as a water supply many years
ago. Flint was abundant at one time in this cave and the Indians
used it to make arrowheads, knives, scrapers, and tools for
everyday living. This is a neat activity only moments away from
your Pigeon Forge cabin.
The cavern was
eventually abandoned by the Indians and during the early 1920’s.
When the cavern was found empty white men began using the cavern
to make moonshine. The cavern was an ideal spot due to the
seclusion and constant flow of water. They continued using the
Forbidden Caverns as their operating headquarters for moonshine
until 1943. In 1964 a group of businessmen bought the area and
started plans of opening the cavern to both local and
vacationers in the Pigeon Forge area. After 3 years of
excavation and preparation they finally succeeded in their goals
by getting it ready for others to enjoy. In June 1967 the
Forbidden Caverns were officially opened to the public. They
have preserved many of the natural formations that continue to
form to this day. They allow groups to take a one hour tour of
the cavern led by a well-trained guide. The guide will inform
you of all the history and information about this Pigeon Forge
attraction. The Forbidden Caverns can be both an entertaining

sparkling stream that the Indians once used, stalactites, etc.
