Pet-Friendly Hiking Trails:

Pets on hiking trails can get a little tricky because the National Park Service Rangers (and us!) want the most safe and enjoyable experience of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for everyone. It is probably a safe bet to say that your pet is not accustomed to seeing large animals like elk, wild turkey, and black bears. No matter how well trained your dog may be, the wildlife is not always going to be so unaffected by your dog’s presence.

While there are over 800 miles of hiking trails to explore in the park, there are only 2 trails in the perimeter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that allow dogs. This is for the safety of everyone inhabiting the park: you, your pup, and the wildlife. These trails, the Gatlinburg Trail, and Oconaluftee River Trail are both dog and bicycle friendly.

You don’t have to be inside the park, however, to enjoy some awesome Smoky Mountain views and trails. Here are a few of our favorite area trails that the whole family will love exploring:

Townsend Trail
This 9-mile trail in the city of Townsend is one of our favorites! It is pet and bicycle friendly following the Little Pigeon River and highlighted by lovely forestry, historic sites, and access to shopping, eating, and more!

The River Walk Greenway
This short trail is actually in the heart of downtown Pigeon Forge, following the river through town. It begins in the beautiful Patriot Park, however, where you can pack a blanket and a Frisbee to relax and play near the historical Old Mill.

Mynatt Park
Located in Gatlinburg, this beautiful park supplies visitors with a covered picnic pavilion to enjoy a packed lunch after exploring the numerous walking trails through the Smoky Mountain forestry and alongside peaceful babbling creeks.
